The U16 Tidal Wave Girls Soccer Team returned from an 11-day trip to Denmark where they participated in the prestigious Dana Cup International Soccer Tournament. This is the second largest tournament in the world; attracting over 850 teams from more than 40 countries around the world. The team consists of players from Rehoboth, Norton, Sharon, Massachusetts and a number of Rhode Island communities. The team faced

one team from Denmark, two teams from Sweden and five Norwegian teams. Norway, along with the United States is considered one of the strongest women's soccer programs in the world.

In the first round of games, Tidal Wave played its first two games to 0-0 draws before breaking out to take the third game 4-0. In the final knockout round of games, Tidal Wave won five straight to take home the winner's trophy. Their wins included two penalty shootout wins where the US team clearly was stronger in penalty shooting.

In the final match, the young US squad faced a strong Norwegian opponent, Korsvoll IL. The game went back and forth until just two minutes before the half when Stephanie Powers muscled her way to goal and powered the ball past the keeper. In the second half the game remained tight, with both teams missing narrowly on several opportunities. About halfway through the second half, the Norwegian left midfielder collected the ball near the sideline, streaked to goal, and fired a shot just inside the far postl. Amazingly, the US keeper, Jocelyn Grenier, somehow was able to get a hand on the ball and make the save. With just over two minutes remaining in the game, Kathleen Smith from Rehoboth, Massachusetts stole a Norwegian ball, cleverly faked out two defenders and fired in the US team's second goal. Tidal Wave hunkered down and kept the Norwegians out of the goal for the final minutes of the game. In all the team played eight games, winning six, drawing two and losing none. They outscored their opponents by a combined score of 17 to1.
